Introducing AMD Ryzen 7000 Desktop CPUs with new Zen 4 architecture

After announcing Ryzen 6000 series processors and new GPUs earlier this year, AMD has officially announced its upcoming Ryzen 7000 series desktop processors at the virtual trade show event Computex 2022 in Taiwan. These new CPUs are intended to compete with Intel’s latest 12th generation Core processors on the market. Please see below for details.

AMD Ryzen 7000 Series CPU Details

AMD has officially announced its next Ryzen 7000 series of desktop CPUs. This is said to be a 15% improvement in single-threaded performance compared to the previous generation. These are based on TSMC’s 5nm process technology and will be the first desktop-class CPUs built on it. For reference, Intel’s latest Alder Lake 12th generation CPUs are built on a 10nm node.

The CPU runs up to 5.5 GHz and delivers twice the amount of L2 cache per core, similar to the Ryzen 7 5800X3D with 3D V-Cache technology, delivering ultimate gaming performance on your PC. The move from the 7nm Zen 3 architecture to the 5nm N5 process also means that the core chiplets consume less power and can offer higher frequencies.

Additionally, AMD has added an RDNA 2-based graphics engine to its Ryzen 7000 series CPUs . This will be a welcome change for gamers, as the CPU will come with a dedicated high-performance graphics card to run AAA titles. The company displayed a pre-production model of its Ryzen 7000 CPU that ran at a clock speed of 5.5 GHz throughout the gameplay of Ghostwire, a AAA title. This processor delivered 30% faster performance than the Intel Core i9-12900K on Blender multi-threaded rendering tasks.

Ryzen 7000 series CPUs also support the latest memory and connectivity technologies such as DDR5 RAM and PCIe 5.0 storage . According to AMD, the company is also partnering with Phison to develop next-generation PCIe 5.0 SSDs that will deliver 60% faster performance than PCIe 4.0 SSDs.

AMD Socket AM5 platform details

To support the new processors, AMD also announced a new series of motherboards based on Ryzen 7000 series processors and offering up to 24 lanes of PCIe 5.0 storage. The AMD Socket AM5 platform comes in three configurations : X670E (Extreme), X670, and B650 .

The X650 Extreme supports PCIe 5.0 on all onboard devices, while the mid-tier X670 supports PCIe 5.0 only on the graphics card and storage. As for the budget B650, only the storage supports PCIe 5.0.

AMD has confirmed that its latest motherboard models featuring Ryzen 7000 processors, PCIe Gen 5 support, and dual-channel DDR5 RAM will be available through OEMs such as Asus, Gigabyte, MSI, Biostar, and Asrock . It was also revealed that PCIe 5.0 SSDs will be available from brands such as Crucial, Phison, and Micron. The company has not revealed the exact release schedule for its upcoming products, but confirmed that they will be released this fall.

Besides these, AMD also announced a new ‘Mendocino’ processor for budget and mid-tier laptops with Zen 2 cores and RDNA-2 architecture based graphics . These are expected to offer the best battery life of up to 10 hours on budget and mid-range laptops. These will be available to OEM partners at prices ranging from $399 (approximately Rs. 30,947) to $699 (approximately Rs. 54,216) . Laptops featuring the new AMD Mendocino processors are expected to be available in Q4 2022.
