Rumors have been high that the iPhone 15 series will include a USB Type-C port, and Apple executive Greg Jozwiak has confirmed that the company will be ditching the Lightning port in favor of USB-C. As a result, the rumors are growing even more. Now we’ve got some new information about the data transfer speeds this will bring, and how Apple plans for two types of USB-C ports.
Apple adopts two types of USB-C for iPhone 15 series
Renowned analyst Ming-Chi Kuo revealed that Apple may use high-speed USB-C ports for iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max models. This is either USB 3.2 or Thunderbolt 3 . (4/7) The wired transfer speed of new high-end iPhones in the second half of 2023 is likely to improve significantly, benefiting the growth of the high-speed transfer IC design industry. Apple’s existing suppliers (e.g. Parade, Asmedia, Genesys Logic, Renesas, etc.) are expected to be major beneficiaries. — Ming-Chi Kuo (@mingchikuo) November 17, 2022
The vanilla iPhone 15 and possibly the iPhone 15 Plus will likely feature USB 2.0, which has data transfer speeds similar to the Lightning port. However, the iPhone 15 Pro model is said to have significantly faster speeds, up to 40Gbps .
If this happens, Apple will again differentiate between iPhone Pro and non-Pro models in order to increase Pro sales, as they did with the iPhone 14 series. The iPhone 14 Pro models come with the A16 Bionic chipset, 120Hz ProMotion display, and some camera upgrades, while the non-Pro iPhone 14 comes with the older A15 Bionic chipset and 60Hz screen.
Kuo also believes this juncture “will drive demand in the Apple ecosystem for high-speed transfer chips and competitor imitations.” “
Aside from the inclusion of a USB-C port recently mandated by new EU law, the iPhone 15 Pro is expected to come with 8GB of RAM , which would be the highest RAM configuration for an iPhone. iPhone 14 Pro models support 6GB of RAM. The iPhone 15 Pro will likely do away with the physical volume and power buttons and replace them with a solid-state button design that mimics the feeling of pressing a button.
There will also be some camera upgrades (except perhaps 8p lens support), battery improvements, etc. The iPhone 15 series is expected to be released in the second half of 2023, but there is no concrete information regarding this at the moment.
