Apple expects to ship more than 100 million iPhones next year. That’s a huge number to ignore, especially now that smartphone sales are slowing. But a new patent was published online today that could give the company reason to be confident about shipping next year.

The patent application, first spotted by LetsGoDigital, introduces a new Apple device that appears to be an iPhone, but could also be the next-generation iPod Touch. There’s one reason we’re skeptical that this is an iPhone patent. The patent filing sketch (attached below) doesn’t boast a notch above the top like it does for the current generation of iPhones.

The sketch shows a device with a full-screen display, no notch or well, bezels on the front , and a vertical camera setup on the back. However, what’s strange is that the render shows a power button, mute switch, and volume rocker, but skips the selfie camera. I also don’t see any mention of the Face ID hardware that currently resides inside the notch and is the only unlocking mechanism available on the iPhone.

The report further suggests that what you see above could be a rough design sketch for next year’s iPhone. In addition to introducing an in-display selfie camera, Apple also plans to ditch Face ID in favor of an in-display fingerprint sensor. This seems highly unlikely, as Apple’s Face ID is superior to other facial recognition technologies currently in use. It also won’t suddenly ditch the notch and bring back Touch ID in new avatars.

As reported by GSMArena , the patent application declares it to be a partial patent. Although the device may be registered as a “computer with communications capabilities,” Apple is only patenting the display, and the dashed outer shell of the device is included for reference only. Masu. The report doesn’t go into details about the display itself, so it’s certainly lacking in detail in that regard.

So, if I had to guess, this patent would most likely be for the new iPod Touch that will be released next year. A refresh of the iPod was announced earlier this year, but instead of adding Face ID, it kept the old design with Touch ID. Another speculation is that Apple is considering introducing a new iPhone lineup, and it could come with a new display. However, this is just a patent application, and there is no guarantee that the display technology will be used in any products in the future.
