Qualcomm Snapdragon X Elite with Oryon core announced for Windows PCs

After more than two years, Qualcomm’s acquisition of Nuvia has finally come to fruition with new Snapdragon X-series chips for the PC platform. Qualcomm has developed a new PC chipset that could rival Apple’s M-series processors, alongside the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3. The “Snapdragon X Elite” chipset features a Nuvia-designed core and is poised to supplant x86 Intel/AMD processors in the PC world.

This is the first time Qualcomm has used a newly designed core called Oryon instead of the Kryo core in a PC. x86 processors have long disappointed Windows users when it comes to efficiency, but the Snapdragon X Elite changes the game in a big way. Snapdragon X Elite Pack Oryon CPU, Adreno GPU, and Hexagon NPU

Snapdragon X Elite features a new Oryon core designed by the Nuvia team within Qualcomm. It features 12 high-performance cores and is built on TSMC’s 4nm process node. All cores have a maximum frequency of 3.8 GHz, and two cores can increase clock speeds up to 4.3 GHz for intensive tasks. It is a tri-cluster design with four cores packed into three tiles.

Qualcomm has managed to add a total of 42MB of cache to the Snapdragon X Elite. The CPU can access 8 channels of LPDDR5X memory with 136 GBps of bandwidth . This is great. According to the company, Snapdragon X Elite delivers 2x faster CPU performance than x86 12-core laptop processors and matches peak performance using one-third the power.

What ‘s more, Snapdragon Compared to ARM’s competitors (such as Apple M-series processors), peak multi-threaded performance is improved by 50%.

As for the GPU, the X Elite’s premium Adreno GPU is integrated with the SoC, which is also incredibly power efficient. 3DMark WildLife stress tests deliver 2x faster GPU performance compared to comparable x86 integrated GPUs, matching peak performance at 1/4th the power. When compared to leading x86 integrated GPUs, Adreno GPUs are 80% faster and use 5x less power to match peak performance . This is amazing.

The Snapdragon X Elite’s Adreno GPU runs 4.6 TFLOPS and can handle an internal 4K display at 120Hz and output triple 4K screens or dual 5K screens . Drivers are upgradable and Qualcomm is working with the industry to enhance support for the platform.

Moving to the AI unit in Snapdragon It can perform 45 trillion operations per second (TOPS) and can run LLM locally using the 13B parameter. Running the 7B LLM model, Qualcomm’s new PC chipset can generate 30 tokens per second.

Additionally, for the first time, Windows PCs come equipped with Qualcomm Always-on Sensing Hub , which enables faster AI tasks like noise cancellation, presence detection, and voice chat. Not to mention, laptop manufacturers now have the option to combine the Snapdragon X Elite with the Snapdragon X65 5G modem to build always-on products. It also offers lossless audio support, Wi-Fi 7 capability, Microsoft Pluton support for security, Snapdragon seamless integration with smartphones, and more.
