How to Break Bedrock in Minecraft (Guide) (2023)

Despite all the changes made to Minecraft, some blocks, mobs, and items still remain the same. Some of these long-lasting elements are so iconic at this point that it’s really weird to play the game without them. One block that you may have considered is the bedrock block. This super tough block was one of the first features added to the game. Its purpose is also important for terrain generation, as it prevents you from falling into the cavity below. It is impossible to obtain Bedrock as an item in Survival Mode. That would break the game and be unfair, especially on Minecraft servers. However, players don’t care about getting bedrock in Minecraft, they care about breaking it. Don’t waste your time and learn how to break the rock in this nice block game.

What is Bedrock in Minecraft?

Not to be confused with the Bedrock edition of the game. Bedrock blocks are the most powerful in-game blocks found at the bottom of the Minecraft world. You can find bedrock covering the entire roof of the Nether dimension. This block is highly explosive resistant and cannot be obtained or destroyed by any tools or effects in the game, including the most powerful explosions such as those created by End Crystals.

Preparations necessary to destroy bedrock

We personally tested this method on Minecraft Java Edition and it works perfectly if you time it right. But before we move on to the actual process, let’s take a look at the list of items needed for this method. There are many ways to do this, but our method was inspired by YouTuber Mysticat. To destroy the bedrock you will need the following items:

  • 2 TNT blocks
  • 1 obsidian block
  • 2 pistons
  • 1 lever
  • 1 wooden trapdoor
  • Other blocks like cobblestone

Note : These are the minimum resources needed, but you should bring spares of all items listed. Because breaking bedrock is a glitch and doesn’t work perfectly every time. In addition to each of the required items listed above, bring additional obsidian, flint, and steel. These supplies will help you create additional nether portals if you get stuck on a roof.

2. Lever

To craft a lever, you only need one cobblestone block and a wooden stick. Place the stick on top of the cobblestone block on the grid or workbench block in your inventory.

3. Trap door

To create a trapdoor, you need 6 planks of the same type of wood . Use these to completely fill any two rows of your crafting area. Make sure the selected columns are adjacent. The trapdoor is now ready. This crafting recipe allows you to obtain two trapdoors.

4. Piston

Finally, to craft a piston , you will need 4 cobblestone blocks, 3 wood planks, 1 iron ingot, and redstone dust. Our Minecraft ore distribution guide makes finding iron and redstone easy.

To craft, you must place an iron ingot in the center of the crafting area and redstone dust directly below it. Next, place the wooden board on the top row of the table. Finally, fill the remaining cells on the sides of the center column with cobblestone blocks. That’s it!

5. Obsidian

Obsidian can be crafted and mined using a diamond pickaxe. We’ve created a complete dedicated guide on how to make obsidian, so check it out if you need help.

How to break bedrock in Minecraft

With all the items at your disposal, you only need to reach the bedrock layer before you start. So let’s see how.

Step 1: Reach the bedrock layer

Whether you’re in the Nether dimension or the Overworld, the easiest way to reach bedrock layers is to dig straight up. And it’s not difficult to do so thanks to the large and deep cave system. But that’s not the only place where bedrock exists. You can also cross the roofs of the Nether dimension, which are seemingly out of reach. Here’s how:

  1. First, create a nether portal in Minecraft to reach the nether dimension. The linked guide will help you do it quickly. Be sure to take a wooden ladder and some ender pearls with you when you enter this dimension.
  1. Then, once you’re in the Nether, start building pillars upward until you reach the upper bedrock layer. Once there, make sure there are no other blocks between you and the top of the bedrock layer at Y=127. To do this, press the F3 key on your keyboard to open the debug screen.
  2. A section called ” Target Block ” will appear on the right side, displaying the coordinates of the block you are looking at. So if the bedrock block you’re looking for has a Y coordinate of 127, that’s the block you’re looking for. Additionally, be sure to remember the coordinates of that block, as you will need them later.
  1. Once you find such a place, place a ladder that leads to a bedrock block . There should be enough space to stand there and climb the ladder.
  1. Finally, climb the ladder and hold the forward key when you reach the top. Then throw the ender pearl at the bedrock block. You should glitch your way through the blocks and reach the roof of the Nether.

Step 2: Start destroying the bedrock

Now that you’ve reached the roof of the Nether, follow our step-by-step guide below to break bedrock blocks in Minecraft.

  1. Select the bedrock block whose coordinates you saved. It is a block that is in the roof of the Nether, and is also a block that has no other bedrock blocks underneath it. Selecting this block in particular makes it easier to connect regular nether and nether roofs. Then place the piston on top of it . Make sure the piston is facing up and not in any other direction.
  1. Next, place a TNT block on top of the face of the piston and an obsidian block on one of its sides.
  1. Next, you need to place other blocks on top of the obsidian block. The tutorial uses cobblestone. Once placed, place a TNT block on top of that block .
  1. Finally, place a trapdoor on the top half of the obsidian block. Next, place the lever on the block placed on top of the obsidian block. The setup is now ready for action as shown in the screenshot below.

Step 3: Exploit the Piston Obsidian Glitch

Once you’re set up, it’s time to destroy Bedrock. Our objective is to use a lever to actuate the TNT and the piston at the same time. Once the TNT destroys the piston, you must replace it with another piston that can destroy obsidian blocks. Also, be sure to wear armor , as you can die from TNT explosions.

  1. These steps should be performed as soon as possible. First, prepare the piston by holding it in your hand . Next, stand next to the obsidian block and pull the lever.
  1. Pulling the lever activates the TNT block. Now, you only have 3 seconds to act . Activate the trapdoor by standing next to it. In this step, your character will enter a swimming position (see screenshot below).
  1. While under the trapdoor, aim for the top corner of the obsidian block . Then, while holding the piston in your hand, start hitting the secondary action key repeatedly.
  1. If everything goes according to plan, the piston will be positioned upwards. And the bedrock block below it will be destroyed. You can repeat this process multiple times until you get it right.

This method relies solely on the glitch of the piston to remove rock. Normally, when a piston is actuated, any block moves from its position . However, if the block you are trying to move is a bedrock block, it will not activate. Therefore, the only purpose of this method is to actuate a piston placed on top of the Bedrock block. The reason it works is due to sheer fortuitous timing.

When the lever is actuated, a piston placed in front works together with two TNT blocks. As soon as the TNT destroys the piston, place another piston face down. Looking up in swim mode will help position the piston.

If the swap is fast enough, the game treats both pistons the same and activates a new piston that replaces the bedrock block. As you might expect, there are multiple variations of this machine using redstone, but the basic principle remains the same.

Whether you want to access the void or build on roofs in the Nether, you now know how to break bedrock in Minecraft. Note that broken bedrock blocks cannot be recovered, but can be replaced with other blocks. Having said that, don’t forget to share other ways to destroy bedrock in the comments section.

FAQ

How can I quickly place the second piston?

If you can’t press the default second key (usually the right-click key) right away, you can bind that particular action to another key on your keyboard. So if you hold down that key when you want it, the second piston will be placed automatically.

The piston entered, but the rock did not break. How to fix it?

For most players, this method does not work on the first try. You will have to repeat it many times until the timing is right. In most cases, the second piston pointing upwards indicates that the piston is working.

How to avoid TNT damage in Minecraft?

If you try this method in survival mode, wearing enchanted armor will help you avoid damage from TNT. However, you can also create potions of healing to avoid death.
