Apple shuts down the app that brought iMessage to Android

in short
  • Beeper Mini is a new Android app that was announced just a few days ago that brings iMessage support to Android phones.
  • Apple has stepped in and patched the technology used in the Beeper Mini app to enable iMessage on Android.
  • Apple issued a statement about Beeper Mini and its technology, citing security and privacy concerns over its actions.

Apple has killed off Beeper Mini! That’s right, the new app that turned the green bubbles blue is currently not working due to Apple’s intervention. Basically, Beeper Mini brings iMessage to Android – we tested it last week – and it worked very well. But as expected, Apple doesn’t seem to want iMessage to exist on Android.

Last weekend, a Beeper Mini ($ 1.99 /month ) user posted on Reddit noting that the app was no longer working. The error code the user received was ” Search on server failed: Lookup request timed out .” In my own Beeper Mini app, I get the same error code when trying to send a message.

“We are dealing with an outage on the Beeper Mini side. We are aware of it and are already working on a fix,” a company representative said in a Reddit thread. A post was also made by the company handle X. .

Yesterday, the developers again tweeted that they are continuing to work on fixing the issue, so it looks like they have some ideas on how to bring back iMessage functionality on Android.

Apple clearly doesn’t want iMessage on Android!

Apple has blocked the way Beeper Mini works. When Beeper Mini was first released last week, it was touted as an iMessage emulation app for Android with the same end-to-end encryption as the iPhone.

There is hope that the Beeper Mini will start working again, but it is unclear if the app will work again . Apple has made its stance on this app clear. In a statement shared with The Verge by Nadine Haija, Apple’s senior PR manager, she said, “At Apple, we build our products and services using industry-leading privacy and security technologies.” I did.

Apple went on to essentially say that Beeper doesn’t meet this standard. “[Apple] has taken steps to protect users by blocking techniques that exploit fake credentials to access iMessage.”

Additionally, Apple claims that the use of these technologies (utilized by Beeper Mini) increases the potential for ” metadata exposure ,” resulting in an increase in the amount of ” unwanted messages, spam, and phishing attacks. ” He continued to say that it was possible. All in all, Apple shut down the Beeper Mini and even put it in a bad light.

“These technologies posed significant risks to user security and privacy” – Apple, from The Verge

There is much debate about which side to support. U.S. Sen. Elizabeth Warren criticized Apple for X, saying, ” Big tech executives protect their profits by crushing their competitors .” Nevertheless, for a few days, iMessage was cross-platform and the overall functionality was very smooth.

iMessage for Android should definitely come in the future. Once it is present, green bubbles and blue bubbles will become friends again. Just as the US senator said, cross-platform messaging will be “easy and secure.” However, I don’t think Apple wants to bring iMessage to Android.

Developers like Beeper and previous attempts by Nothing & Sunbird via the Chats app may continue to try to bring iMessage to Android, but Apple may continue to kill new attempts.

Overall, iMessage is a key selling point for Apple products, especially in the US. To protect this USP, Apple plans to move iMessage away from other platforms . For consumers, this will cause some problems, so unless Apple forces Android to bring iMessage, it probably won’t happen.

For now, Apple has extended an olive branch to Android users as well, limiting the world to RCS messaging adoption. This makes messaging between Android and iOS slightly better and more secure. However, in true Apple fashion, these messages will still be displayed in green to distinguish them from iMessages on your iPhone.

Perhaps someday Apple will release an official iMessage Android app, even if it’s paid, so everyone can have fun participating in group chats without the shame of having different colored messages.
