Huawei is passionate about revolutionizing smartphone photography and making it easy for average consumers to capture DSLR-like images. The Pixel 3 was the best camera device ever for this purpose, but Huawei’s latest flagship smartphone, the Huawei P30 Pro, packs some impressive camera hardware and features that will blow your socks off. I made my debut.
The Huawei P30 Pro is set to make its debut in India next week on April 9th and is equipped with the company’s most powerful processor, a quad camera with up to 50x zoom, the ability to capture even the moon up close, an exciting gradient design, And a lightweight user experience all bundled into one smartphone.

Huawei was kind enough to send us the P30 Pro. We have a stunning aurora version that reflects the light to reveal this dual blue gradient shade. I’ve been using the Huawei P30 Pro for just 24 hours and here are my first impressions of the device.

Huawei P30 Pro: Design and build
The Huawei P30 Pro is a beautiful device to look at, and you’ll notice it the moment you take it out of the box and peel off the wrap that holds it in place. This smartphone is built on the great design of Huawei’s previous flagship, the Mate 20 Pro, and I like the look of it.

Huawei says that the P30 Pro’s beautiful gradient glass panel color comes from nature, specifically the salt flats and the passage of the day there . The comfort and feel of the device in the hand is very similar to the Mate 20, which means the P30 Pro is very sturdy and has some weight to it. It is IP68 certified and has reverse charging capabilities in addition to wireless charging.

It gives you the feeling of holding something heavy yet delicate in your hands. There’s also an amazing technological feat: a vertically arranged Leica-branded quad-camera setup on the back. Although this camera setup packs a lot of advancements, the bumps aren’t all that great, and the case only further protects against scratches.
As for ports and buttons, the latter has a very nice feel and I like the red indentation on the power button. While the former is a lone wolf, they are also well positioned. There is only a USB Type-C port on the bottom, no 3.5mm headphone jack. The bottom has a speaker grill and SIM tray, while the top has an IR blaster and noise-canceling microphone.

Turning to the front, the Huawei P30 Pro includes a gorgeous display with smaller bezels (more on that below) and an improved in-screen fingerprint scanner compared to the Mate 20 Pro . The P30 Pro’s fingerprint scanner is optical (rather than the ultrasonic sensor seen on the Galaxy S10 Plus), and this time it’s placed lower.
As with most optical in-display fingerprint sensors, it takes some time to set up, but it works very perfectly. The unlocking process is fast and reliable . I haven’t run into any issues I’ve had to use this pattern so far, and the speeds seem to be about on par with the latest Vivo smartphones.

Huawei P30 Pro: Display
The huge 6.47-inch curved OLED panel is one of my favorite features of the Huawei P30 Pro. The company has done away with the Apple iPhone X-style notch, which has all the necessary hardware to enable the 360-degree facial unlock feature on the P30 Pro. It has a trendy drop-shaped notch for discreet operation, and we love how it makes the front of the device look taller and more aesthetically pleasing.

With an aspect ratio of 19.5:9 and a resolution of 2340×1080 pixels, the Full HD+ OLED panel looks absolutely stunning with punchy colors, deep blacks, and incredible brightness. Like the Galaxy S10, the top and bottom bezels are minimal, and they look pretty good in the short time I used them.
Huawei P30 Pro: Camera
Enhanced from the previous flagship, the Huawei P30 Pro features a Leica-branded quad-camera module with a primary 40MP (f/1.6) SuperSpectrum sensor (with RYYB Bayer filter), 20MP (f/2.2) ultra-wide angle Masu. camera (120 degrees+ FOV), an 8MP (f/3.4) telephoto camera (with 10x superzoom), and finally a time-of-flight (TOF) camera. TOF cameras are currently used for low-light photography and portraiture, but in the future they will also be useful for AR applications.

You can learn more about the quad cameras on the Huawei P30 Pro using the link here. There’s also a 32MP (f/2.0) selfie camera. Check out the camera samples we captured here.

But perhaps the P30 Pro camera’s biggest highlight is its incredible zoom capability. The smartphone offers 5x optical zoom, 10x hybrid “nearly lossless” zoom, and 50x digital zoom. I’ve been using this feature since I got my P30 Pro, and my first impression was that my jaw hit the floor. Below are some samples.

So the cameras here look promising, but obviously I’m going to test them thoroughly and compare them with other flagship smartphones. To find out more about the P30 Pro’s camera performance, stay tuned to our full review.
Huawei P30 Pro: Performance and software
You may already know this, but let’s review it again. The Huawei P30 Pro is powered by the company’s in-house 7nm Hi-Silicon Kirin 980 chipset, with up to 8GB of RAM and up to 256GB of internal storage. This is Huawei’s most powerful and capable chip to date, and I’ve had no performance issues in the past 24 hours using this device.

I know you want to know what gaming feels like on the P30 Pro, but I haven’t been able to test it yet since it has a camera. We’ll tell you all about it in our detailed review.
In terms of software, Huawei P30 Pro supports EMUI 9.1 . This is Huawei’s custom take on Android and is the only smartphone to come preloaded with this new skin variant. It’s based on Android 9 Pie and is packed with features, and you still have to dig deep to explore them all. So 24 hours is really not enough.
Huawei P30 Pro: Battery
The Huawei P30 Pro has a large 4,200mAh battery pack, but it’s only about 8mm thick, which is quite impressive. You can use your smartphone comfortably without feeling the weight. You should be able to use this battery pack for up to a full day on a single charge without exceeding its limits.

And even if you completely drain your battery from playing a lot of PUBG Mobile or watching BTS videos (which is what I’ve been doing lately), you can use the 40W supercharger bundled with the P30 Pro. When used, it can charge nearly 75% of the battery. The battery dies in just 30 minutes. Just like the Mate 20 Pro, the charging power has not been increased above 50W.

First impressions of Huawei P30 Pro: That camera is the bomb!
Huawei P30 Pro offers endless possibilities. I support this statement from this actual impression. I say that because of the smartphone’s amazing, mind-boggling (oh yeah, I felt like I was missing one adjective) camera performance. It seems to be posing a challenge to its competitors in this sector, packing in all the necessary features and a lot of excess features.
The only question now is whether the Huawei P30 Pro is the best flagship smartphone, or whether Samsung will manage to retain its title. We’ll explore the same in a detailed review coming soon, so stay tuned.
