Galaxy S9 Plus review: More refined than the S8?

Samsung’s new flagship is here. While the Galaxy S9 is a decent new flagship, the S9 Plus is the new Samsung flagship to watch because it has a dual-camera setup, more RAM, and more battery. Well, we’ve been carrying the S9 Plus (starting at ¥64,900) for over 10 days now, and yes, it does look a lot like the S8 Plus, which is a positive because it means the new S9 Plus is gorgeous and looks great. It’s a target. But is it just an improved version of S8, or is it more than that? And if it is an improved version of S8, does it fix all the flaws of its predecessor? Yes, we have a lot of questions about the S9, and we’ll give you all the answers in our Galaxy S9 Plus review.

Quality of design and construction

The Galaxy S9 is beautiful, especially the blue version you see here. I mean, I’ve had people come up to me and compliment me on the color of the phone. Yes, it’s definitely an attention grabber, and the design is mostly S8-ish, but there are some really nice things about the S8’s design, like not having much of a fingerprint magnet on the back and the fingerprint scanner just in place. There are points for improvement. It’s the right place. Although I’m not a fan of the scanner’s rectangular design, setting up the fingerprint and even its detection is very fast.

There are also new dual stereo speakers here for perfect volume and clarity. i really like it. These are very nice improvements, plus the S9 has all the great things about the S8 , including a pressure-sensitive home button, an IP68 rating, and the popular headphone jack. Additionally, if you’ve noticed the dents on your S9 Plus, we’ve dropped the phone three times. So at least the units here are pretty sturdy.

Other than that, it’s regular Samsung with a USB-C port and the same buttons, including a Bixby button. So, is the design still good in 2018? I agree. I mean, the S8’s design is over a year old now, but it’s so good that I don’t think anyone would have a problem with Samsung using the same design language as the S9. Seriously, the S9 looks great and feels great in the hand .

And it has a beautiful curved display. We all know that Samsung’s flagships come with great displays and the S9 also comes with a gorgeous display. I don’t think any other smartphone can match this display . Namely, DisplayMate recently awarded the Galaxy S9’s display the Best Smartphone Display award.

Yes, the S9 Plus boasts one of the best displays on a smartphone. At least this is the best smartphone display I’ve seen. To be honest, just looking at the curves of the S9 display can make you drool. Black, color, everything is great.

This is one of the best smartphone displays I’ve ever seen.

camera

Perhaps the biggest new feature of the S9 is the camera. Samsung has made a lot of innovations on the camera front, and it seems like it’s paying off. First, let’s talk about the specs. The S9 Plus here comes with a 12 MP primary camera with dual apertures of f/1.5 and f/2.4. There is also a secondary 12 MP f/2.4 telephoto lens. Without further ado, here are some photos of the S9 Plus.

As you can see, the Galaxy S9 Plus takes very good photos . The photo has decent detail and the colors seem a bit saturated, but that’s subjective as many people prefer that. It also handles harsh lighting well. It’s really impressive, but the S9 Plus is most impressive when shooting in low light. Let’s take a look at some low light shots of the S9 Plus.

As you can see from the photo, thanks to the wider aperture of F1.5, the S9 lets in a lot of light, resulting in bright photos with very good colors. I mean, look at the photo above. they are amazing. Plus, if you’re wondering how well the new dual aperture system works. Here are some shots taken with both f/1.5 and f/2.4 apertures.

It’s clear that the S9 Plus’ dual aperture actually works very well. The wider f/1.5 aperture makes low-light photos look brighter and nicer. Meanwhile, the narrower f/2.4 aperture provides crisp daytime photos.

The S9 Plus also has a portrait mode, and portrait shots are great with edge detection and background blur, whereas the S9 only smooths out facial details. Here are some portrait mode shots we took.

Also, compare it to the Pixel 2’s portrait mode shot.

The S9 Plus has an 8 MP f/1.7 camera on the front, which seems to be quite capable. There’s also a portrait mode, and the photos are just so-so. That said, some photos are good, but some have inaccurate edge detection and lack sharpness, similar to the rear portrait mode.

Now let’s move on to video shooting. The S9 Plus shoots 4K video at 60 FPS, but when shooting at 60 FPS, the S9 Plus disables OIS stabilization, so even though I shot a 4K video at 30 FPS, the color and focus of the video may be affected. It’s great, but the video is not stable. sufficient. I have dual OIS so I don’t know what was the problem. Check out the video shot with the S9 Plus in the video below.

Finally, on the front of the camera is a new super slow motion video feature. The S9 Plus shoots 720p video at 960FPS . Isn’t that so cool? Well, it’s only super cool when it works, and when it doesn’t, it’s just super frustrating . In fact, the S9 Plus can only capture 0.2 seconds of super slow motion video, which we found wasn’t enough. There are two modes that allow you to shoot super slow-motion videos: automatic and manual. In automatic mode, S9 Plus automatically detects movement and triggers slow motion. The problem here is that sometimes automatic mode works and sometimes it doesn’t. Well, if you try, most of the time it doesn’t work. Manual mode is better, but the slow-motion trigger can only capture 0.2 seconds, making it very difficult to time. Honestly, while the super slow motion video looks cool , I honestly believe it’s a gimmick and not something people will use often .

Overall, I really like the camera on the S9 Plus. This device takes great photos, especially in low light. Seriously, the S9 Plus’ low-light photos are amazing. But is the DxOMark score of 99 justified, which is better than the Pixel 2’s score of 98? Well, I’m not sure. So if you watched the S9 Plus vs Pixel 2 camera comparison video , you already know that it’s not the best camera phone, at least to me, but it’s definitely on par with the best. Masu.

Overall, I really like the camera on the S9 Plus. This device takes great photos, especially in low light. Seriously, the S9 Plus’ low-light photos are amazing.

performance

Next, let’s talk about the performance of S9 Plus. The S9 Plus is the first smartphone to feature the Snapdragon 845, but only in the US. India has the S9 Plus, which is powered by the equally or even more powerful Exynos 9810 Octa . When it comes to benchmarks, the S9 Plus is right at the top when it comes to Android smartphones, but we all know about Samsung smartphones and their mediocre performance. Well, that seems to be changing, at least when it comes to flagships.

I mean, the S8 was one of the best luguist flagships I’ve ever used, and one of the luguist flagships, but the Note 8 has remained stable even after several months, and the same thing I would like to believe that this applies to S9 Plus. After using the device for 10 days, the S9 Plus felt very smooth. Admittedly, some of the Experience UI transitions seem a little over the top, but otherwise the phone is fast, and even though it looks the same, Samsung has definitely made improvements under the hood for the S9 Plus. I believe that.

software

The S9 Plus comes with Samsung Experience UI 9.0 based on Android 8.0 Oreo. The S9 and S9 Plus experience UI looks the same as last year, but there are some new tricks Samsung has introduced with the S9.

First, there’s the new Intelligent Scan , which switches between facial recognition and iris recognition depending on the situation. For example, when there is not enough light for facial recognition to work, the iris scanner kicks in and works very well. I really like this implementation , as facial recognition on the S8 and Note 8 was honestly mediocre. But hey, I’ve found it works fine every time on my S9 Plus, but there’s one problem. It’s still not as fast as you’d hope, like the OnePlus 5T’s fast face unlock.

Apart from intelligent scanning, there is another facial recognition feature. Yes, we’re talking about AR emojis. Well, the AREmojis on the S9 Plus are…I don’t mean to mince words, but they’re just awful . That said, it’s easy to use and allows you to use people’s faces to create more personal emojis, but that’s about the only novelty here. AREmoji cannot detect the correct expression. I mean, I’m not a big fan of Animoji on the iPhone X, but AREmoji on the S9 Plus is mediocre compared to Animoji. Well, let me say it again, AREmoji is terrible.

Finally, on the software side, Bixby has a number of improvements. Bixby can now recognize food and translate languages live. Yes, Bixby can even do your makeup for you . While the first two features are useful, I think the makeup feature works well, but it’s definitely not for me.

Overall, the Experience UI is still the feature-rich Samsung UI we’ve come to expect, and some of the new features and improvements are definitely useful.

battery

Like last year’s S8 Plus, the S9 Plus comes with a 3500 mAh battery. While this seems low for a device with a huge display, the new chipset in the S9 Plus is said to be more power efficient, and we think the S9 Plus’ battery life is average . In my usage, it almost always lasted me a day, and that’s all I needed. Don’t expect amazing battery life from the S9 Plus.

However, there is support for fast charging. The S9 Plus went from 10% to 100% in 1 hour and 32 minutes . I think this is pretty decent.

connectivity

The S9 Plus comes with all the connectivity options associated with modern flagships. The S9 Plus has dual SIM slots with a hybrid nature, meaning you can use one of the slots for a SIM card or a microSD card. Thanks to the device’s NFC support, you’ll also find Samsung Pay here. Other than that, it’s the usual stuff like Wi-Fi 802.11 a/b/g/n/ac, Bluetooth 5.0, and USB-C 3.1.

Is the Samsung Galaxy S9+ worth it?

Well, that’s pretty much all there is to know about the S9+, but now a very important question arises. Is the Galaxy S9 Plus worth it?Let’s be honest, the S9+ isn’t a huge upgrade over the S8. Definitely not, but improvements like speedy performance, a better camera, and a sleeker design make it a great flagship model.

If you have an S8, S8+, or last year’s great flagship model, you don’t need to consider the S9 at all, but if you have an older device, the S9+ is a great option. That’s if you don’t mind Samsung’s poor reputation with the Samsung Experience UI and updates, and don’t want to wait for a 2018 Pixel or iPhone.

The S9+ isn’t a huge upgrade over the S8. Definitely not, but improvements like speedy performance, a better camera, and a sleeker design make it a great flagship model.
