Google Phone introduces dark mode for Contacts app

When the Google Contacts app added a dark theme earlier this month, all we could have hoped for was for Google to roll out the same thing to the Phone app. It looks like the company heard what we asked for, as a dark mode is now available to beta users of the Google Phone app.

Google Phone version 26 (public beta) finally introduced a dark mode option, just as we expected, bringing it on par with all other Google apps that feature dark mode. So, if you want to switch to a new theme, follow the steps below to do the same.

How to enable dark mode on Google Phone

Note : I tried the new dark mode on Google Phone v26 (beta) on a Nokia 7 Plus running Android 9 Pie.

1. Open the Phone app, tap the three dots icon in the top right corner, and go to the Settings menu from the overflow menu .

2. Next, tap Display Options and toggle the newly added Dark Theme option to apply the new theme.

The dark theme is now enabled on your Google Phone app. This is one of the big changes we’ve been waiting for. However, if Android Pue’s Night Mode developer option is already set to “Always On,” the theme will be applied automatically after the update.

I’ve been using dark mode in the Google Phone app since last night when the update was applied, and here’s what I think about it.

I usually enjoy the dark, pastel hues that Google uses in its other apps, but I couldn’t emulate the same appeal on Google Phone. In addition to changing the app’s background to a darker shade, the text in the contact’s name will also change to a pastel top (on the Favorites page).

The material theme combined with the new dark mode looks great on the screen during calls . After switching out of Contacts dark mode, the background of the caller screen is no longer blinding with a pure white background.

Google has admitted that it made a mistake in forcing users to use a white theme, since a dark theme is good for battery life, especially considering that its Pixel smartphones have OLED displays. What do you think about dark mode in the Google Phone app? Let us know in the comments below.
