After years of constant requests from users. Instagram is planning to change the way feeds are presented to users. The social media app announced today that it is reintroducing the chronological feed it retired in 2016 in favor of an algorithm-based feed. This information was confirmed by Instagram CEO Adam Mosseri during a Senate hearing on how Instagram approaches child safety.
Instagram’s chronological feed is back
When asked how users can better control Instagram without algorithmic intervention, Mosseri revealed that the app is working on a version of the chronological feed, expected to be released early next year.
This information was later confirmed through a tweet shared by the Instagram Comms Twitter handle. It has also been revealed that Instagram is testing a ‘Favorites’ section to improve the experience for users. There will also be a ‘Recommended Posts’ section. We want to give people meaningful control over their experiences. We’re experimenting with favorites, a way to decide whose posts you want to see at the top, and we’re also working on another option to show posts by users you follow in chronological order. I’m here. — Instagram Comms (@InstagramComms) December August 2021
For those who don’t know, Instagram introduced its current algorithmic feed in 2016 to help people see the posts they are most interested in. Additionally, he said there is an issue with the chronological feed that prevents Instagram users from seeing all posts, including important ones. However, this feed did not receive much positive feedback and people ended up hating it simply because the posts did not appear in a timely manner. Instead, it shows people posts that Instagram thinks are important to them based on their choices and actions.
In 2017, the feed was updated to include recommended posts from accounts you don’t follow. It added to the negative attention this feature was receiving. I made further changes to the feed, but that didn’t seem to help either.
It looks like things are about to change for the better. That said, details such as how the new Instagram chronological feed will work are still being kept under wraps. More information is expected in the coming days.
Returning to the Senate hearing, Instagram aimed to come up with new ways to keep teens safe on its platform. Speaking of which, the Meta-owned company recently introduced a new step in its direction, specifically the “Take a Break” feature. To further strengthen security for teens on the platform, the company plans to introduce parental controls next year.
