OnePlus 6 Portrait Mode Test: Still Lacks Flagship Finesse

OnePlus devices are widely known as flagship killers, and for the most part, that moniker is true. However, if there’s one department where the OnePlus smartphone just can’t match flagship models like the Google Pixel 2 or Samsung Galaxy S9 Plus, it’s the camera. No matter how hard OnePlus tries in the past, it has never been able to deliver the camera performance you would expect from a high-end device. That being said, it’s a new year and there’s yet another OnePlus device in the company. So, let’s put the brand new OnePlus 6 to the portrait mode test to see if OnePlus has improved over the past six months.

Note that here we will only focus on the portrait mode performance of the OnePlus 6 camera. So, if you want to see how the camera performs in other situations, check out our full OnePlus 6 camera review. As far as Portrait mode performance is concerned, OnePlus 6 failed to wow us. That said, in bright light, portrait shots came out quite beautifully, but even with Beauty mode turned off, the OnePlus 6 smoothed out facial details . After that, there were times when the OnePlus 6 could not clearly identify the subject and the outline was noticeably blurred.

Things got even worse when we tested the OnePlus 6’s portrait mode feature in low light. It was very difficult to get the portrait effect right. Believe me, we really struggled. Portrait photos taken in low-light situations also showed noise . Overall, the OnePlus 6’s portrait mode performance isn’t bad by any means, but it’s not great either. You can take good portrait photos from this phone, but you’ll have to put a lot of effort into it.

OnePlus 6 Portrait Mode Test: Still a long way to go

The OnePlus 6 has a very good camera, especially considering the price of the device. However, we have not yet reached the point where no matter what photo we take, it will always turn out well. OnePlus still has a long way to go to compete with smartphones like the Pixel 2. That said, I’m impressed and hopeful about the progress the company has made since releasing its last smartphone, the OnePlus 5T. The company will be able to offer a true flagship product in the future.
