Samsung to stop production of LCD panels by 2020

It has been reported that Samsung will end production of LCD panels in South Korea and China. According to Reuters, the South Korean tech giant plans to stop producing LCDs by the end of this year.

The move follows Samsung’s previous announcement that it would shut down one of its two LCD production lines in South Korea in October last year due to declining demand.

However, the company plans to fulfill all current LCD orders by the end of 2020 . “We intend to supply ordered LCD displays to customers without any problems by the end of this year,” a Samsung spokesperson told Reuters.

It is worth noting that Samsung last year announced a 13.1 trillion won ($10.72 billion) five-year investment plan to upgrade its LCD production lines in South Korea to focus on producing quantum dot OLED panels. .

However, plans for the future of China’s LCD production lines remain unclear for now. Samsung is likely to use its Chinese factories to focus on quantum dot OLED panels to stay ahead of LG.

Samsung’s withdrawal will force companies like Apple to turn to other suppliers to meet their LCD needs. However, there are also reports suggesting that Apple will switch iPads and MacBooks to Mini-LED displays.

Samsung isn’t the only company leaving LCD behind in favor of better, more sophisticated display technology. LG, one of Samsung’s main competitors in the display market, also announced that it would stop producing LCD TV panels by the end of the year and focus on QLED and OLED panels.
