Apple has introduced a new iOS 16 feature to developers called Private Access Tokens (PAT) , which was first spotted on Reddit . This was also explained in detail by the Cupertino giant in the WWDC 2022 session titled “Replacing CAPTCHAs with Private Access Tokens.” These tokens use a combination of details about your Apple device and Apple ID to prove that you are actually a human and not a bot, effectively overriding the CAPTCHAs currently used for similar purposes on the web. “Private access tokens are a powerful alternative to help identify HTTP requests from legitimate devices and people without compromising identity or personal information . This new feature allows servers to request tokens using a new HTTP authentication process called “PrivateToken.” These tokens are verified using a cryptographic process, allowing the server to know that the client was able to pass the attestation check. Apple also clarified that the server receiving the token can only check whether the token is valid. This means that the server cannot detect or recognize the client’s identity, thus protecting the client’s privacy.

Additionally, CDNs like Cloudfare and Fastly are already integrating new technologies to bypass CAPTCHAs on your website. It has also been revealed that this feature is included in the latest iOS and iPadOS 16 developer betas and is turned on by default. This can be found in the “Privacy & Security” section of Settings.
