This guide contains some of the best fixes to resolve monitor ghosting, or at least reduce the problem and make it less annoying. Having said that, let’s first explain what monitor ghosting is, including its causes. Next, consider fixes that can completely alleviate the problem, or at least reduce its impact. 
Monitor ghosting: what is it and what causes it?
Monitor ghosting is the appearance of shadows or tails appearing behind moving objects on the display. This tends to be very noticeable when the display needs to show fast-paced movement, like in games or movies. In some cases, monitor ghosting and motion blur can occur at the same time and be distracting.
What causes monitor ghosting? When a monitor’s pixel response time is too slow, visual artifacts such as monitor ghosting and motion blur occur. Basically, if the monitor’s pixels don’t update smoothly and cleanly , users may sometimes find themselves trailing behind objects. Below is an example of what monitor ghosting can look like. To reduce monitor ghosting and improve visual clarity in fast-paced scenes, monitor manufacturers have introduced new features as well as increased monitor refresh rates. At the moment, 500Hz monitors have been announced and the 360Hz refresh rate barrier has been broken for quite some time.
Additionally, there are technologies to reduce monitor ghosting and motion blur, such as ELMB, which is part of the Zowie XL2546, and BenQ’s DyAC. You may have also heard of G-SYNC and FreeSyn. These are focused on reducing screen tearing, but they can help promote visual clarity and reduce visual glitches.

Other common factors include using the wrong display profile or not having motion blur reduction features activated. 
How to fix monitor ghosting: 5 best methods
Now that we know the cause, here are five solutions that can either completely resolve the monitor ghosting problem, or at least avoid it to the point where it’s no longer noticeable.
1. Set your monitor refresh rate to the highest available value
- Right-click your desktop and click Display Settings .
- Then click Show details .
- Then click the drop-down menu and change the refresh rate to the highest value to finish applying the fix.
- If you’re running Windows 10, or if you can’t change the refresh rate to one that your monitor supports (for example, if you have a 144Hz display but only 60Hz is available), see our guide on how to change your monitor’s refresh rate. Please refer.

2. Change display profile to gaming mode
Use the buttons on your monitor to access the settings and look for the menu where you can change the display profile. In my case, I had several different presets, including Gamer 1, Gamer 2, FPS, RTS, Vivid, Reader, and HDR Effect. FPS profiles or gamers are usually best for reducing motion blur and monitor ghosting.
3. Change monitor response time settings
Access the settings using the buttons on the monitor. Then, once you find the response time setting, change it to the ” Fastest ” setting or try other options to see if they reduce monitor ghosting. In my case, for my LG Ultragear 32-inch 165Hz monitor, this option was under Game Adjustments > Response Time .
4. Enable motion blur reduction function
Many monitors have motion blur reduction features. BenQ Zowie monitors are equipped with DyAc technology. On ASUS monitors, it’s called ELMB or ELMB Sync. On LG monitors, this is a motion blur reduction feature. So, don’t forget to enable these features as they can reduce ghosting and motion blur on your monitor.
Access the settings using the buttons on your monitor and move through the menu to find the Motion Blur Reduction setting. On my LG Ultragear 32-inch 165Hz monitor, the option was under Game Adjustments -> 1ms Motion Blur Reduction.
5. Enable VRR, GSync, or FreeSync
GSync and Freesync, along with variable refresh rate (also known as VRR/DRR) in Windows 11, aim to fix screen tearing issues that are distinct from monitor ghosting. However, you can reduce ghosting issues by enabling these features.
To do this, go to Monitor Settings and look for it. In my case, on my LG Ultragear 32 inch 165Hz monitor, the option was under Game Adjust -> Freesync Premium . Please note that motion blur reduction features (such as ELMB and DyAC) may not be enabled in conjunction with GSync/Freesync. So, test both features to see which one gives you the least amount of ghosting on your monitor.
