The long-awaited Counter-Strike 2 is almost here. Many players are wondering if they can still play the old Counter-Strike: Global Offensive (CS:GO) game after the release of Counter-Strike 2. Will CS:GO be removed after the release of CS2? Here are the details on whether Counter Strike 2 will replace CSGO upon release.
The future of CS:GO after Counter-Strike 2 launches
There is reason to believe that Counter-Strike 2 will “replace the old game” known as CS:GO. Currently, in the CS2 beta, game files are located within the CS:GO installation folder. Additionally, SteamDB lists Counter-Strike 2 with app ID 2279720 , which resides within the parent app with ID 730 for CS:GO.
As such, Counter-Strike 2 exclusive tests existed within CS:GO during the beta period. Every time I accessed the CS2 beta, the Steam app asked me if I wanted to launch Counter-Strike 2 or the old game, making sure both games were in the same folder. In turn, Valve has already confirmed some features for Counter-Strike 2 that indicate it will replace CS:GO with CS2 when the new game launches.
When the CS2 exclusive test was announced, Valve said, “You can bring your entire CS:GO inventory into Counter-Strike 2.” Additionally, the developers said that all CS:GO items that players have collected and used over the years will “benefit from Source 2’s lighting and materials.”
Additionally, the developer has confirmed that CS:GO’s stock weapon models will be upgraded to higher resolution ones. I have the CS2 beta, so please find the inventory page attached below. As you can see here, many of my previous inventory items are in my Counter-Strike 2 inventory, including my 2015 Service Medal ( issued 7 years ago ).
Additionally, Counter-Strike 2 uses many of the same assets as the older game. Yes, the new game has a new and evolved map. However, some maps just have upgraded lighting and graphics from Source 2, and the textures still look the same as in Global Offensive. These maps are similar to the old games, except for the Source 2 engine. These all indicate that Counter-Strike 2 will replace CS:GO .
Can I still play CSGO after Counter-Strike 2 is released?
Is there a way to play Counter-Strike: Global Offensive (CS:GO) after CS2 launches? The answer is no. You can no longer download CS:GO from Steam. After the release of Counter-Strike 2, if you search on the Steam store, the official lineup for Counter-Strike will look like this: In the image below, you can see that CSGO has replaced CS2 in the CS lineup. Additionally, the CS:GO store link now redirects to the Counter-Strike 2 listing, confirming that the game has been replaced.
An unofficial version (download at your discretion) of Dota 2’s Source 1 engine is used. Like Counter Strike 2, Dota 2 also received the Source 2 engine update . And a lot of people used this unofficial Dota 2 (older, Source 1 version) to play old demos from really old “International” tournaments that were held during the Source 1 era of the game. Therefore, it may be possible to perform a similar workaround to view the GOTV demo in Counter Strike 2 for older tournaments. Please note that Valve no longer appears to be officially distributing CSGO files .

Valve has officially moved on to Counter-Strike 2 . Old assets (including inventory items) from the old game are used in the new game. Unofficial versions of CS:GO may be available on the Internet. However, you cannot play online unless Valve or a third party server is present. Even if it is, we recommend not using it due to malware and other security concerns.
Previous Counter-Strike games exist, including Counter-Strike 1.6 and Counter-Strike: Source . But Valve had so much financial power in CS:GO that the best decision was to move on to a new game.
If Valve releases the classic CS:GO version with a separate Steam Store listing, we will update this section. One of the confirmed ways to continue playing CS:GO is by playing it on older consoles. Yes, this game actually launched on PS3 and Xbox 360 . That version hasn’t been updated for a long time. If you own one of these consoles and have CS:GO installed, Valve technically can’t stop you from playing CSGO. There may also be a way to play older games using the original CS:GO (PC version) DVD .

That being said, players will definitely be nostalgic for the iconic era of Counter-Strike: Global Offensive . What do you think about CS2? Would you like to see Valve give players a way to access CS:GO? Let us know in the comments below.
