Building a house in Skyrim is a bit of a puzzle in itself. Let’s try to decipher this in the simplest possible way.
Honestly, building a house is different from buying a house in Skyrim. And obviously more effort is required, especially in sourcing the necessary materials (shortcuts will be explained later).
However, building your own has its own perks and can be customized and expanded whenever you have the resources.
In particular, the first thing you need is a plot of land.
There are several locations, including The Pale, Falkreath, and more, where you can speak to their respective chieftains, complete quests, and advance your land ownership.
It’s faster this way, so proceed from Falkreath Hold.
So, once you arrive in Falkreath, find the Chieftain’s Longhouse and meet the current Chieftain, Sidgeir, to ask him to do some work for you.
You will be asked to kill the bandit leader of the Byle Gulch Mine. This is a simple quest to defeat a few bandits, and all you need is a good bow and arrows.
You will then meet the chief, receive your reward, and begin purchasing land. He will direct you to Nenya the Butler, from where you can get one for 5000 gold.

Importantly, this begins when you ask to buy a house and are told that there are no houses for sale in Falkreath, so you should buy land instead.
Next, move on to the property’s location, Lakeview House, northeast of Falkreath.

The default set of tools present on your site are:
- Drafting table: Used to select items to create
- Chest: Contains basic necessities
- Carpenter’s workbench: For primary construction
- Anvil: for making some of the building materials.
Now that you’ve arrived at the construction site and you have the necessary tools, let’s get started.
build a house in skyrim
You start at the drafting table where you choose what to create. In this case, the first will be the layout of a small house. This is the simplest and requires the least amount of supplies.

Once you’ve created your plans, the next tool you’ll want to use is your carpenter’s workbench.
The construction of a small house has the following components:
- foundation
- wall frame
- wall
- floor
- roof frame
- roof
- door
It is just for reference. You don’t need to remember anything. They will gradually appear as you build using the carpenter’s bench.
The total number of building materials required for this minimal construction is:
| material | amount | item code |
| cut stone | 14 | XX00306C |
| sawn logs | 17 | XX00300E |
| nail | 30 | XX00300F |
| clay | 4 | XX003043 |
| iron fittings | 1 | XX003035 |
| rock | 1 | XX003012 |
| hinge | 2 | XX003011 |
Everything you need to build a small house is here.
The basic supply chest contains 30 clay, 1 corundum ingot, 6 iron ingot, and 30 quarried stone. In addition, you can find 20 swan logs stacked nearby (they will not appear in your inventory).
So, since you already have the raw materials, all you have to do is use the anvil to create iron fittings, hinges, nails, and locks.

However, the easiest way is to use a console command using the item code above.
For example, pressing ~ in-game and typing player.additem 0300306c X will add X quarry stones to your inventory.
Now replace the XX at the beginning of the item code with the DLC code 03. The DLC codes for Dragonborn, Hearthfire, and Dawnguard are 02, 03, and 04, respectively.
As you assemble the house components at the carpenter’s workbench, the house will gradually begin to be built.

The construction of the small house is now complete.

However, this is a bare-bones structure with no additional rooms. Basically it’s just a hall.
For a full-fledged house, you’ll need to go back to the drawing board to create more plans and use the carpenter’s table to note and procure the necessary building materials and make any extensions.

As mentioned earlier, console commands are the easiest way to retrieve constructs. So here’s some more code for items you might need for your expansion.
| material | item code |
| glass | XX005A69 |
| goat horns | XX00303F |
| straw | XX005A68 |
| iron ingot | 0005ACE4 |
| leather strip | 000800E4 |
However, there is a traditional (and sometimes tedious) way to procure all this for the no-shortcut builder within you.
For example, quarried stone can be found all over Skyrim. However, not all allow mining. It’s some shiny stuff that looks a little different than the stones it’s connected to.

You’ll also need a pickaxe to get started if you don’t have one nearby.
Still, looking for them is no fun. Therefore, we recommend that you turn to the Skyrim Fandom Wiki and search for all the locations where a particular building material can be obtained.
Furnish your Skyrim home
No matter how much you expand your home, it will remain empty until you make some arrangements.
The easiest way to make your home look livable is to use cheats to source materials and use workbenches in all areas of your home.

These workbenches are different from the workbenches found outside the house (carpenter’s workbenches). The option to add a workbench to every room in your house will appear in the drafting table menu and can be removed once you have finished creating the furniture pieces.

Most of the hard work falls on your shoulders, but it’s best to hire a janitor for upkeep. Especially in Falkreath, you can talk to the chieftain and ask if there’s anything else you need, and he’ll tell you about any vacant subordinate titles.
This requires helping at least three Falkreath residents. You can try this your own way, but I recommend asking:
- Matisse at Corpse Light Farm
- Heart at Half Moon Mill
- Sageir of Dengeir House
These don’t take much time. After helping them, you can ask the chief. The Jarl will appoint you as Falkreath’s squire and provide you with Housecarl Rayya.
Finally, you can ask Rayya to be your butler.

Although the butler can’t do everything, he helped arrange things like carriages, cows, horses, basic furniture, and building materials.
It takes a lot of money to get the stewards to do something. You already know the usual way to get gold, but as a shortcut, use the console command player.additem 0000000F X to get “X” amount of gold.
summary!
That was a simple guide to building a house in Skyrim.
I agree that it takes a lot of effort, but building everything brings its own satisfaction for many people. As a reminder, houses in Skyrim can be used to store weapons or live with your spouse and children.
PS: Among the many fun things, becoming a werewolf in Skyrim offers unparalleled thrills and a unique gameplay experience, so we highly recommend you to try it out firsthand.
